The first time a Biophage lunges out of the dark in The Callisto Protocol, you realise this is not a game that wants you to shoot from a safe distance. It wants you close, swinging a stun baton, ducking a claw by inches and feeling every impact. That close-quarters brutality is the signature of Striking Distance Studios' 2022 survival horror debut, a studio led by Glen Schofield, co-creator of Dead Space, and the spiritual kinship with that series is everywhere, from the diegetic health implant glowing on the back of Jacob's neck to the obsessive attention to sound.
Jacob Lee, played by Josh Duhamel, is a cargo pilot who crash-lands on Jupiter's moon Callisto and is thrown into Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary three centuries in the future. Before he has even settled into his cell, the inmates begin transforming into monstrous creatures and the facility collapses into chaos. Karen Fukuhara plays Dani Nakamura, a resistance fighter with her own reasons for being there, and Sam Witwer plays Captain Leon Ferris, the prison's hard-edged head of security, while Warden Duncan Cole's secrets hang over everything.
Combat is a deliberate rhythm of blocking, dodging and counter-striking. Push the stick left or right to slip an attack, then punish with the baton before following up with a pistol shot. The GRP, a gravity device strapped to Jacob's wrist, lets you lift enemies and hurl them into spinning fans and spiked walls, which never stops being satisfying. Some Biophages sprout writhing tentacles mid-fight, and blasting them away in time is the only way to stop a creature mutating into something far worse.
Reviews were mixed, with critics praising the staggering visuals, lighting and audio while finding the combat and a repeated boss encounter divisive. What nobody disputed was the atmosphere: rain-lashed exteriors, claustrophobic vents and prison blocks that feel heavy and lived in. For players who like their horror grim, gory and cinematic, it is a handsome, nerve-shredding trip to the edge of the solar system, and a fascinating companion piece to the Dead Space lineage it grew out of.
