Item Description

It is 1962, the Cold War has America braced for an attack from the Soviet Union, and the invasion that actually arrives comes from much farther away. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, developed by 2K Marin and published by 2K Games in 2013, tells the origin story of XCOM as a mid-century spy thriller, with Special Agent William Carter drafted into a top-secret government unit investigating a wave of mysterious attacks on American soil.

Where the strategy games put you in a bunker looking down at the map, The Bureau puts you on the ground. It is a third-person cover shooter in which Carter leads two field agents into every mission, and the key is Battle Focus: tap into it and the action slows to a crawl while you order your squad to flank, take cover, target a specific enemy or unleash their special abilities. Agents come in classes such as Commando, Engineer, Recon and Support, they level up and gain new skills, and if one falls and is not revived in time, that agent is gone for good. That permadeath sting is pure XCOM.

The setting is the star. Between missions Carter walks the halls of the Bureau's secret headquarters, talking to staff and choosing assignments, and in the field the alien threat crashes into small-town Americana, with familiar XCOM foes such as Sectoids and Mutons stalking through farm towns and government facilities dressed in sharp 1960s style. Suits, fedoras and period cars give the whole game a Mad Men-meets-The X-Files atmosphere.

The Bureau had a famously long road to release, first unveiled in 2010 as a first-person shooter before being rebuilt into a squad-based tactical shooter, and reviews were mixed. What it offers today is something no other XCOM entry tries: real-time squad command with the series' consequences intact, wrapped in a Cold War conspiracy. For XCOM collectors it is the franchise's strangest and most stylish branch, and worth seeing on its own terms.
