Item Description

A quiet night at the bar explodes when a special forces team crashes through the roof and snatches a young girl named Dominique. Three bouncers, Sion, Volt and Kou, chase after her, and The Bouncer turns their rescue mission into one of the PlayStation 2's earliest showcases of what the new hardware could do. Released in Japan at the end of 2000 and in North America in 2001, it came from DreamFactory, the studio behind Tobal and Ehrgeiz, working with Square.

The structure is unusual, and that is its charm. Before many fights you choose which bouncer to control, and your pick shapes the scenes you see along the way, so the short story invites replays to piece together each character's angle on the conspiracy behind the kidnapping and the powerful Mikado corporation at its center. Battles are fast 3D brawls where your two partners fight alongside you, and the Bouncer Points you earn are spent on stats and new moves, gradually turning each brawler into a fighter built your way. A separate versus mode lets up to four players settle scores head to head.

The presentation is the real calling card. Tetsuya Nomura designed the characters only a short time before Kingdom Hearts made his style famous, and the music by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi gives the cutscenes the feel of a late-night action movie. Back then, the seamless shift from story to fight made it a must-see demo for anyone with a new PS2.

Reviews were split, with plenty of praise for the visuals and frustration at its brief length, and it has since settled into cult status. Today it is a vivid time capsule of the PS2's early cinematic ambition and of Square's experimental side at the turn of the century, best enjoyed in a sitting or two and then replayed as another bouncer to see what you missed.
