KING Art's sequel returns to Aventásia, the storybook fantasy world of the first game, and hands Wilbur, Ivo, Nate and Critter another adventure that cares as much about making you laugh as it does about testing your brain.
This is point-and-click adventuring in the classic mold. You poke at everything, pocket odd items, combine them in your inventory in ways that make a twisted kind of sense, and talk your way through conversations with a cast of eccentric locals. The story shifts its focus between the four heroes, and some of the most satisfying puzzles come when you have to stop thinking like a player and start thinking like a particular character, whether that is a gnome who has read too many spellbooks or a smuggler who would rather bluff than fight.
The series has always gently skewered fantasy clichés, and this entry keeps the jokes coming: genre tropes, adventure-game conventions and pop-culture nods all get poked fun at, but the affection behind the parody never slips into cynicism. The fully voiced cast keeps the banter lively, and the richly detailed locations have the warm, hand-crafted look of an illustrated fairy tale, so simply wandering a new area and clicking on the scenery is half the fun.
On Wii U, traditional comic adventures of this kind were few and far between, which makes this one stand out on the shelf. It is the sort of game that rewards an unhurried evening, a notepad for the trickier puzzles and a fondness for the LucasArts and Sierra era of the genre, carried forward with modern production values and a script that clearly loves its characters.
