Item Description

A pixelated paddle, a stream of incoming beats, and a chiptune track that grows richer every time you connect: that is how the Bit.Trip saga begins, and across six games it turns that simple idea into something unexpectedly moving. This 2015 collection gathers the entire series, all six games originally released on WiiWare, and marked the series' first appearance on PlayStation.

Each entry reinvents the rules. Bit.Trip Beat is a rhythm spin on Pong, bouncing beats back in time with the music. Core hands you a cross of X and Y axes to zap beats as they pass over. Void puts you in control of an ever-growing black hole that must swallow black shapes while avoiding white ones, a design that still feels like nothing else. Runner, the best known of the bunch, is an auto-running rhythm platformer where every jump, slide and kick lands on the beat, and Fate becomes a musical on-rails shooter before Flux returns to the paddle for the finale. Threaded through all of them is the wordless story of the life and death of Commander Video, the series' blocky, unflappable hero.

The sound is what ties it together. In most of the games, playing well pushes you up through modes that layer more and more onto the soundtrack, while too many misses strip it back toward silence, so a great run literally makes better music. These are tough games built on the score-chasing instincts of the early arcades, and the collection softens the barrier with Easy, Normal and Hard settings for every title, plus Trophies, with both the analog stick and the d-pad on the DualShock 4 handling the precise movement well.

Gaijin Games, later renamed Choice Provisions, made Bit.Trip one of the defining indie series of the WiiWare era, and Runner's success spun off a sequel line of its own. Here all six games live in a single package on PS4, a tidy way to follow Commander Video's full arc from the first paddle bounce to the final trip.
