Item Description
Yoji Shinkawa made his name drawing the angular soldiers and towering machines of Metal Gear Solid, so handing him Magic's original artifact mage feels like a perfect match. This Tezzeret comes from the Special Guest: Yoji Shinkawa Secret Lair, collector number 1111, a borderless foil that gives Shinkawa's sweeping, ink-heavy style the whole card face to work with.
Underneath the art is the very first Tezzeret card, a five-mana blue planeswalker from Shards of Alara who starts at 4 loyalty and thinks only about artifacts. His +1 untaps up to two of them, which turns a Sol Ring, Gilded Lotus or Thran Dynamo into an immediate burst of extra mana. His −X tutors an artifact with mana value X or less straight onto the battlefield, so he can grab a cheap rock right away or a bigger piece once his loyalty climbs. Save up for the −5 and every artifact you control becomes a 5/5 creature until end of turn, a surprise alpha strike out of a board of mana rocks and trinkets.
In Commander he is a natural fit for blue artifact decks, where untapping two rocks every turn quietly snowballs into the biggest mana on the table, and the −X keeps finding whatever piece the deck is missing.
