Item Description

If there is one game that never leaves a Game Boy Color owner's bag, it is probably Tetris DX. Nintendo took the game that made the original Game Boy a phenomenon and rebuilt it in color for the launch of the new handheld in 1998, and the result is the most complete version of handheld Tetris from that era.

The rules have not changed, and they don't need to. Seven tetrominoes fall, you rotate and slot them into place, and every cleared line buys you a little more time as the speed climbs. What DX adds is structure. Marathon is the classic endurance run, Ultra challenges you to score as many points as possible against the clock, and 40 Lines is a pure sprint to clear forty rows as fast as you can. A VS. COM mode pits you against a computer opponent, and with a link cable two players can go head to head, sending garbage lines back and forth just like the original's famous multiplayer.

Color changes more than you might expect. Each piece has its own hue, which makes the playfield easier to read at high speed, and the familiar music, including the Russian folk melody that became the unofficial anthem of the Game Boy, sounds right at home. A battery save keeps high scores and statistics for multiple player profiles, so a whole family can compete for the top spot.

The skill ceiling is effectively endless, every session is a fresh puzzle, and the game rewards a five-minute break as well as it rewards an hour-long Marathon. Tetris DX is the definitive way to play Tetris on the Game Boy Color, the game that defined Nintendo handhelds at its most polished.
