Item Description

Cruising an island coast road at sunset in a convertible, with nowhere you have to be, is the fantasy Test Drive Unlimited 2 sells, and few racing games of its generation committed to the lifestyle side of driving quite so hard. Eden Games built two full islands from satellite data, sunny Ibiza and Oahu returning from the first game, with more than 3,000 kilometers of road between them, and lets you explore every stretch of it freely.

The story starts at the bottom. You are a broke valet in Ibiza working for Tess Wintory, host of the Solar Crown championship, until a lucky break gets you entered in the competition. From a run-down caravan you work your way up, earning licenses from driving instructors for modern asphalt cars, off-road machines and classics, buying houses to hold a growing garage, shopping for clothes and taking on rivals in one-on-one races where the loser hands over their car. Later the championship moves to Oahu, reached by air once you have climbed the ranks.

Off-road routes are new to this sequel and give the off-road class its own playground, while dynamic weather and a full 24-hour day and night cycle change the feel of every drive. Rain on a winding mountain road at night is a very different experience from a bright morning blast down the highway, and the islands reward anyone who simply wanders off to see what is around the next bend. Online free roam with other drivers was a pillar of the original design, and Atari's servers went offline in 2018, so the appeal today is the Solar Crown career and the pleasure of two islands to yourself.

It was the final game Eden Games released before Atari shut the studio down, and its blend of open-world racing and lifestyle sim reads like an early sketch of the island racers that followed, including the series' own Solar Crown revival. It is a playable time capsule of the slower, sunnier side of car culture, and of the PS3 era's most relaxed big-world driving game.
