Item Description
The first night in Terraria tells you everything. You have chopped a few trees, dug a hole, maybe thrown together a wooden shack, and then the sun goes down and the zombies and Demon Eyes come for you out of the dark. Survive until morning and the real game opens up beneath your feet: a procedurally generated world of caverns, ore veins, underground jungles and buried treasure that goes far deeper than you expect.
Re-Logic's 2D sandbox is often compared to Minecraft, but it plays more like an action RPG with a pickaxe. Mining feeds crafting, crafting feeds better weapons and armor, and better gear lets you take on bosses like the Eye of Cthulhu, the Eater of Worlds and Skeletron. Defeat the Wall of Flesh at the bottom of the world and everything flips into Hardmode, flooding your world with tougher monsters and new materials to chase. Along the way you build houses for NPCs such as the Guide, the Merchant, the Nurse and the Demolitionist, who move in once you meet their requirements and turn your base into a living town of shops and services.
Engine Software brought the game to PlayStation Vita in 2013, working with the Terraria team to rework the controls for a handheld, with touchscreen support for faster crafting and inventory management. The Vita version carried the full console adventure plus a first taste of the big PC 1.2 update, with new items, armor sets and enemies. It also introduced cross-save with the PlayStation 3 version and launched with online multiplayer for up to eight players.
Few games suit a handheld this well. Terraria can swallow an entire weekend or fill ten minutes on the couch, and every new world rolls out fresh caves, chests and surprises. On Vita it becomes a pocket-sized way to keep digging, building and boss hunting long after you meant to put it down.
