Item Description
On the musical planet of Rhythmia, a hip-hopping grasshopper named Tempo has to save the rhythm after King Dirge's ants make off with the music. Tempo Jr. is his Game Gear adventure, a bright, bouncy side-scroller and the handheld follow-up to Tempo, the cult mascot platformer from the Sega 32X.
Each level hides an exit to find, with two stages followed by a boss fight. Tempo fires musical notes from his hands to stun enemies, and any stunned foe he touches gets kicked out of the way automatically. His wings are the other key tool: they let him speed up, float through the air, or drift down slowly and with more control, which makes exploring the stages feel relaxed and light. Collect coins along the way and you unlock a mini-game after the level, such as a Simon Says round or a strongman test, for extra points or lives, and Tempo still dances with Katy after each boss.
SIMS, a studio with a long track record on Sega's 8-bit hardware, deliberately pared the 32X game down for the handheld, dropping its dancing mechanic, power-ups and score-based endings. It was released in 1995 as part of the Sega Club line aimed at younger players, and Famitsu was unimpressed, scoring it 18 out of 40. Hardcore Gaming 101 took a kinder view, calling the focused design a perfect fit for the handheld system.
That gentle pace is the appeal: Tempo Jr. lets you take in the cheerful, music-themed world without a punishing challenge in the way. It is one of the Game Gear's late-life mascot curiosities, and the portable branch of a character who otherwise lived on the short-lived 32X.
