Heihachi Mishima finally has to answer for everything. Tekken 7 was built as the conclusion of the Mishima family feud that has driven the series since 1994, and its cinematic story mode, The Mishima Saga, follows a journalist who lost his family in the clan's wars as he pieces together the truth. Along the way it reveals the story of Kazumi Mishima, Heihachi's long-mysterious wife, and builds toward the father-and-son showdown fans had been waiting decades to see settled.
Under Katsuhiro Harada's direction, the fighting kept everything that makes Tekken distinctive, with one button for each limb, deep juggles and 3D sidestepping, and added new tools that make comebacks electric. Rage Arts give a nearly beaten fighter one devastating cinematic strike, Power Crush moves absorb hits and power through them, and when both fighters swing at the same time in a close round the action drops into dramatic slow motion. Unreal Engine 4 brought the series a sharp new look, and the fights feel heavy and fast at once.
The roster mixes classics like Paul, King, Nina, Yoshimitsu and Jin with newcomers including Lucky Chloe, Claudio, Katarina, Shaheen, Josie and the towering Gigas. The biggest surprise is Akuma, who stepped out of Street Fighter to play a central role in the Mishima story and brings his own super meter and fireballs into a 3D fighter. On consoles the extras run deep: the Ultimate Tekken Gallery collects artwork and movies from across the series, a Jukebox lets you swap in soundtracks from earlier Tekken games, and the customization options let you dress your fighters in ridiculous style.
Tekken 7 hit arcades in 2015 and consoles in 2017, and it went on to become the best-selling game in the series and the backbone of its competitive scene for years. On PS4, this is the release that carried the King of Iron Fist Tournament through its longest and most celebrated run.
