The cartoon theme kicks in, the Channel 6 building is crawling with Foot soldiers, and Bebop is making off with a piece of Krang's android body. Within minutes of starting Shredder's Revenge, it is obvious that Tribute Games understood exactly what made Konami's arcade and console Turtles games special, and set out to make the follow-up fans spent three decades imagining.
The roster is the 1987 cartoon brought to life in richly animated pixel art. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael are joined by April O'Neil and Master Splinter, with Casey Jones unlockable, and each fighter has distinct range, speed and power along with unique super moves and taunts. The Turtles' original voice actors from the 1987 series reprise their roles. The fight stretches from the sewers and city streets all the way to Dimension X, with Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang and Shredder among the familiar faces, and pizza boxes keeping everyone on their feet.
The combat runs deeper than the classics it honors. Aerial attacks, supers and team moves give every brawl a rhythm, and players can high-five each other to share health. Story Mode lets you spend points on extra health, lives, new moves and Radical Mode, a temporary power boost, while optional challenges and collectibles fill each stage; Arcade Mode strips it back to limited lives and a single sitting. On PlayStation 4, up to four players can brawl together on one console, and the game was built for up to six in online sessions.
Then there is the music. Composer Tee Lopes wrote a soundtrack that sounds like a lost Saturday-morning mixtape, with Mike Patton on the theme song and verses from Wu-Tang's Ghostface Killah and Raekwon. Critics praised it on release and it sold a million copies within a week. Shredder's Revenge is the beat 'em up that finally gave the Turtles in Time generation a worthy sequel, and on PS4 it is pure couch co-op joy.
