Four players, four turtles, one quarter each: Konami's 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade cabinet was the loudest, most crowded machine in a lot of arcades, and the run of games that followed defined what a licensed brawler could be. The Cowabunga Collection gathers that entire era into one package, thirteen games built by Konami across arcades, consoles and handhelds, and treats them with the kind of care usually reserved for much more serious history.
The lineup covers both arcade classics, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Turtles in Time, alongside the NES trilogy of the first game, The Arcade Game and The Manhattan Project. The Super Nintendo version of Turtles in Time sits beside its Genesis cousin The Hyperstone Heist, three different versions of Tournament Fighters show how wildly the fighting game differed from console to console, and the Game Boy trio of Fall of the Foot Clan, Back from the Sewers and Radical Rescue rounds things out. Japanese versions of the games are included too, which is a treat for anyone curious about the regional differences.
Digital Eclipse, the studio behind some of the best retro compilations around, built in rewind and save states, plus optional enhancements such as extra lives and difficulty adjustments that can make the tougher games far more forgiving. That matters most for the original NES game, whose underwater dam level has been haunting players since 1989; being able to rewind a bad swim past the electrified seaweed is a quiet gift. A Watch Mode lets you view a full playthrough and jump in at any point, and a built-in strategy guide adds maps and move lists for every game.
The real surprise is the Turtles' Lair, an archive of box art, manuals, Konami design documents, advertisements, comic book covers, images from the animated series and soundtrack selections. It turns the collection into a museum of an early-'90s phenomenon as much as a game anthology. Released the same summer as Shredder's Revenge, it is the definitive way to revisit the games that started it all, and the rare compilation where nothing important feels left out.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a 2022 compilation developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Konami. It brings together 13 titles from the original TMNT video game series, including their Japanese versions, spanning arcade systems, home consoles, and handheld platforms. The compilation includes optional gameplay adjustments such as difficulty modifiers, additional lives, and other configurable settings. A “Watch Mode” feature allows players to view automated gameplay and start playing from any chosen point in the recording. The package also contains an archival section called the Turtles’ Lair. This archive includes design documents from Konami’s development materials, as well as box art, manuals, promotional artifacts, soundtrack samples, comic book covers, and images related to the associated animated series. A built-in strategy guide provides game information, maps, move lists, and instructional videos for each title in the collection.
