Item Description

Michael Jordan in the middle of the Bulls' first three-peat, Magic Johnson still on the Lakers roster even though he retired before playing a game that season, Larry Bird in his final Celtics campaign: Tecmo NBA Basketball is a time capsule of the 1991–92 league, with every team and player from that season packed onto one NES cartridge. It was also the first basketball game to carry official licenses from both the NBA and the players' association, which is why those real names are there at all.

Released in late 1992 on the heels of Tecmo Super Bowl, it brings that game's showmanship to the hardwood. Big plays cut away to cinema-style scenes, all 27 teams are on hand, and each of the 324 players is rated for shooting, stamina, jumping, speed, stealing and blocking, so a lineup built around a high-flyer plays differently from one anchored by a shot-blocker. Pre-season games are there for a quick matchup, while the season mode tracks team and individual statistics all the way to the championship, with an All-Star game along the way.

The pace is arcade-quick rather than slow simulation, built for fast breaks and late comebacks, and it plays best with a friend on the second controller. The music is by George Sanger and Paul Webb, Sanger being the composer PC gamers later knew as The Fat Man. More than anything, this cartridge is the 1991–92 NBA frozen in 8-bit form: Jordan's Bulls, Bird's Celtics and a 27-team league on the eve of the Dream Team summer, all rendered in Tecmo's unmistakable style.
