Item Description
Somewhere on the other side of the screen, a world made of paper is waiting for you, and it knows you are there. Tearaway builds its whole adventure on that idea. You are "the You," a giant presence watching from beyond the sky, and the Vita's front camera puts your own face in the sun that shines over the land. Down below, a little messenger with an envelope for a head, Iota or Atoi depending on your pick, sets out to deliver a letter to the one person it is addressed to: you.
What makes Media Molecule's game so special is how physical it feels. Tap the rear touch panel and your fingers burst up through the paper ground, bouncing the messenger skyward or swatting the Scraps, the crumpled enemies that keep ambushing the journey. On the front touchscreen you draw shapes on virtual paper, cut them out and stick them on, whether that means decorating your messenger or snipping a paper crown for a character who needs one. Point the camera at the real world and the photo becomes a new skin for a papercraft creature, so a plain white elk can end up wearing a texture you captured from your own surroundings. Every one of these tricks serves the story, and none of them feel like a tech demo.
The world itself is a joy to wander. Paths and hillsides fold out like the pages of a pop-up book, two narrators keep speaking directly to the You as they spin the tale, and in SogPort the messenger is joined by a baby Wendigo whose fearsome mother eventually turns the tide against the Scraps. Kenneth C M Young and Brian D'Oliveira's score gives it all the warmth of an afternoon at the craft table.
Critics fell for it. Tearaway won three BAFTA awards in 2014, for Best Mobile & Handheld Game, Best Artistic Achievement and Best Family Game, and it holds an 87 on Metacritic. Media Molecule later reworked it for PlayStation 4 as Tearaway Unfolded, but this is the original vision, designed around the Vita's twin touch surfaces and cameras, where you really do poke your fingers through the floor of another world. If one game makes the case for the Vita as a machine with its own personality, it is this one.
