Item Description
Somewhere above the paper world of Tearaway, a sun hangs in the sky, and it has your face in it. Media Molecule, the studio behind LittleBigPlanet, built this 2013 adventure around one delightful idea: you are not just playing the game, you are a character in it, the "You" that a tiny papercraft messenger is trying to reach with a very important letter.
That messenger is Iota or Atoi, an envelope-headed hero you guide through a handmade world of folded hills, crinkled rivers and confetti-strewn villages. What makes the journey special is the way the PlayStation Vita itself becomes part of the story. Tap the rear touchpad and your fingers burst up through the paper ground to scatter enemies or launch your messenger into the air. Draw and cut out your own decorations on the touchscreen and they appear in the world. Point the camera at your surroundings and the real world bleeds into the paper one, and snapping photos of drained, white papercraft creatures restores their color. Tilting, peeling and unfolding the scenery all become ways to solve its gentle puzzles.
The threats are the Scraps, boxy little paper creatures that pour out of rips in the sky, but combat is never the point. The pleasure lies in exploring, in crafting, and in the warm, funny narration that frames your messenger's trip as a story being written as you play. Every corner looks like something you could fold yourself, and the folk-flavored soundtrack adds to the feeling of a storybook come to life.
Tearaway is a compact adventure, and its charm comes from how personal it feels: the world gradually fills with your drawings and your photos, so no two journeys look quite alike. It won wide acclaim as a showcase for the Vita's unusual hardware and later inspired the expanded PlayStation 4 reimagining Tearaway Unfolded. The original, though, only works the way it was designed on Vita, where the rear touchpad and the system cradled in your hands are the whole point.
