Item Description

Team Rocket was the set that finally let Pokémon fans play as the bad guys. Released in 2000, the expansion introduced Dark Pokémon, scruffier and meaner versions of familiar faces, and “Trouble” was one of its two theme decks built to put that idea straight onto the table.

Its star is a holographic Dark Arbok, the deck's only Rare Holo, and the snake fits perfectly: Arbok was Jessie's partner in the anime, with Meowth always close behind. The rest of the Psychic and Grass lineup reads like a roll call of Rocket-era favorites, including Ekans and Meowth, Gastly and Haunter, Abra with both Kadabra and Dark Kadabra, plus Drowzee and Jynx. The Boss's Way helps dig out Dark evolutions, and Full Heal Energy shows how the set liked to experiment with special Energy cards.

Theme decks were how a lot of kids in 2000 learned the game, pairing a ready-made strategy with a holo they could show off at school the next day. Decks from the Wizards of the Coast era of the Pokémon TCG are now pieces of trading card history, and “Trouble” captures the exact moment the game first invited players to root for the villains. Next to its sister deck, “Devastation,” it makes a fitting centerpiece for a vintage Team Rocket display.
