Item Description

Team Rocket put the villains on the cards. The expansion introduced Dark Pokémon, scowling, battle-hardened takes on familiar creatures that hit hard and play dirty, and Devastation was one of the two theme decks built to show them off.

This one pairs Grass and Water, with a holofoil Dark Weezing at its head. Koffing, Dark Vaporeon, Dark Wartortle and Dark Gloom round out a deck that wins by attrition, softening opponents with Poison and Paralysis instead of simply racing them. It plays like a snapshot of early Pokémon TCG design, when a single status condition could swing a whole game and Gust of Wind was the trainer everyone wanted in hand.

Devastation dates to April 2000, the height of the original Wizards of the Coast era, when the Rocket set had kids chasing Dark Charizard and comparing holos at lunch. Theme decks from that run were the gateway for a generation of players, and sealed examples have become a favorite of vintage collectors who want the whole experience intact rather than a single card in a sleeve. Set beside a Team Rocket booster pack or a binder of Dark Pokémon, it tells the story of the moment Jessie and James's crew finally got their own cards.
