Baloo never met a cargo run he could not turn into an adventure, and Capcom's NES take on TaleSpin puts you in the pilot's seat of the Sea Duck for exactly that. Rebecca Cunningham needs deliveries made, Shere Khan has hired Don Karnage and his Air Pirates to sabotage the business, and every job turns into a sky full of enemy planes, gunfire and obstacles.
It plays as a horizontal shooter with a twist that fits the cartoon perfectly. In horizontally scrolling stretches, Baloo can flip the Sea Duck upside down to reverse direction and fly back through the level, grabbing items you missed or turning to face a boss that attacks from behind. Each level ends with a boss you whittle down by hammering its weak points, and the money you collect pays for upgrades between missions: more speed, extra lives and, most importantly, more firepower. Baloo's starting firepower is modest, so those purchases change the whole feel of the game, and deciding what to save up for becomes a strategy of its own. Bonus stages hand the controls to Kit Cloudkicker, riding his airfoil to pop balloons for points.
TaleSpin landed in 1991 in the middle of Capcom's run of Disney Afternoon games, following DuckTales and Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers onto store shelves, and Minae Fujii's score keeps the mood bright and breezy. It is a tougher, scrappier game than its famous siblings, with stingy firepower early on and bosses that demand patience, and retro reviewers have argued about it ever since. Capcom thought enough of it to include it in The Disney Afternoon Collection in 2017, but the NES cartridge is where it started, and in a shelf of Capcom's Disney games it is the one that takes to the air.
TaleSpin is a scrolling shooter video game based on the Disney television series TaleSpin. The game was developed by Capcom for the NES in 1991 and was ported to the Game Boy in 1992. The Game Boy version is essentially a slightly stripped-down version of the game. The NES version of the game was included in The Disney Afternoon Collection compilation for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in April 2017. The gameplay consists of maneuvering Baloo's plane "The Sea Duck" through each level, fending off incoming enemies and avoiding obstacles. Items can be collected for extra lives or to add to the total cash score. The plane can be rotated upside to traverse back through the level, but only on horizontally scrolling areas. At the end of each level, the player is required to fight a boss enemy by repeatedly shooting its weak points. After beating a level, the player has the option to buy upgrades for Baloo's plane with the money collected, before proceeding to the next level. In bonus levels the player controls Kit on an airfoil to pop balloons for bonus points.
