Item Description

Sorey grew up among the Seraphim, spirits most humans cannot even see, and Tales of Zestiria begins when that sheltered upbringing collides with a world sinking into malevolence. Drawing a sacred sword makes him the Shepherd, a legendary figure tasked with freeing the land of Glenwood from the Hellions, monsters born from negative emotion. It is a classic Tales premise with a distinctly melancholy edge, and the game carried extra weight as the series' 20th anniversary title.

Its biggest structural change was the world itself. Zestiria was the first Tales game built around an open-world layout, with battles playing out right on the field, in towns and in dungeons instead of cutting away to a separate arena, and the terrain, from rocks to ponds, can shape how a fight unfolds. The Fusionic Chain version of the Linear Motion Battle System pairs close-range human artes with mid-to-long range Seraph magic, and its signature mechanic is Armatization: Sorey and Rose can fuse with a Seraph partner into a powerful hybrid form with its own attacks.

The cast is the reason many players stay. Mikleo, Sorey's lifelong friend and rival, the gentle Seraph Lailah, the sharp-tongued Edna, the brooding Dezel, the knight Alisha and Rose, a merchant with a hidden side, trade jabs and confessions in fully voiced skits. On the road, each Seraph brings a field ability, from Edna smashing boulders to Mikleo shielding the party from enemy view, and side quests for the tiny Normin unlock new skills. A local multiplayer option lets friends take control of party members in battle.

Zestiria divided parts of the fanbase on release, especially over how its story handled Alisha, but its world proved rich enough to inspire ufotable's anime Tales of Zestiria the X and to be revisited in the prequel Tales of Berseria. On PS4, with a score by Motoi Sakuraba and Go Shiina, it is the place to experience the series' bold open-world experiment and the first chapter of that shared world.

About the game

Tales of Zestiria is a Japanese role-playing game. It is the fifteenth main entry in the Tales series. As with previous entries in the Tales series, the game uses a variation of the action-based Linear Motion Battle System, with additional elements including a navigable open world, and the ability for certain characters to fuse into a single entity in battle to deliver powerful attacks. The story follows Sorey, a young man blessed with powers by a mystical spirit race known as the Seraphim who act as a stabilizing force in the land, as he travels to free the land of Glenwood from the threat of the Hellion, creatures spawned by negative emotions.
