Yuri Lowell is not the usual JRPG hero. A former Imperial Knight who walked away in disgust, he lives in the lower quarter of the capital Zaphias and solves problems his own way, sometimes with methods his best friend Flynn, still loyal to the knights, cannot accept. That attitude gives Tales of Vesperia a moral edge few entries in Bandai Namco's long-running series can match, and it is a big part of why so many fans name it as their favorite.
It all starts small, with Yuri chasing a thief who stole the blastia that keeps the lower quarter's fountain running. The blastia are ancient devices that power everything in this world, from water supplies to the barriers that protect towns from monsters, and the hunt for one stolen core pulls Yuri into a conflict between the Empire and the guilds over who controls them. He gathers a memorable party along the way: the sheltered noblewoman Estelle, the young would-be guild leader Karol, the prickly mage-scientist Rita, the laid-back archer Raven, the mysterious Judith and Repede, a pipe-chewing dog with a dagger in his mouth. Together they form the guild Brave Vesperia, and their banter is the heart of the game.
Combat is fast, real-time action in the series' Linear Motion style. You can free-run around the battlefield, chain artes into combos, trigger Over Limit for bursts of power, finish weakened foes with Fatal Strikes and unleash cinematic Mystic Artes. Characters learn new skills from the weapons they equip, which gives every new sword or staff a reason to experiment, and friends can join in local co-op battles. Motoi Sakuraba's score and Kosuke Fujishima's character designs complete the package.
Vesperia first arrived on Xbox 360 in 2008, and a 2009 PlayStation 3 version released only in Japan added the pirate girl Patty Fleur, made Flynn fully playable and expanded the story. The Definitive Edition finally brought that content to English for the first time in 2019, with full-HD visuals and new music, scenes and bosses. On PS4 it is the version Western Tales fans waited more than a decade to play.
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is a remaster of the expanded Playstation 3 port of the original game, which was exclusive to Japan. Dive into the definitive version of this game with updated full-HD graphics, brand-new music tracks, exciting mini-games, bosses and more! Two more playable characters join the fray! - Patty Fleur, a cheerful and tough young pirate girl in search of treasure, adventure… and her forgotten memories. - Flynn Scifo, Yuri’s best friend and an Imperial Knight, now joins the rest on their journey! A power struggle begins in a civilization dependent on an ancient technology, the blastia, and the Empire that controls it. The fates of two friends traveling separate paths intertwine in an epic adventure that threatens the existence of all.
