Item Description
Alphen cannot feel pain. Shionne cannot be touched without causing it. That pairing, a masked Dahnan slave with no memory and a fugitive Renan woman whose curse hurts anyone who comes near, gives Tales of Arise its emotional engine, and it opens one of the most confident reinventions the Tales series has attempted.
For three hundred years the people of Dahna have lived under the rule of Rena, the world in their sky. Their land is split into five realms, from fiery Calaglia and frozen Cyslodia to the plains of Elde Menancia, the mountains of Mahag Saar and the rainforests of Ganath Haros, each governed by a Renan Lord competing in the Crown Contest to become the next Sovereign. Alphen begins as “Iron Mask,” draws a blazing sword from the Master Core that Shionne has stolen, and sets out to topple the Lords one realm at a time. The party grows to include Rinwell, Law, Kisara and Dohalim, and their camp conversations and skits give the long road its warmth.
Bandai Namco Studios rebuilt the combat around speed and aggression. The series' Linear Motion Battle System is still at the core, but the focus shifts to evading and countering, with the well-regarded combat of Tales of Graces cited as an inspiration. Boost Strikes let party members unleash devastating combined attacks under the right conditions, and stringing artes, dodges and partner abilities into one flowing combo is the game's great pleasure. It is a fully single-player design: the team dropped the series' traditional local co-op control sharing to concentrate on how characters interact in battle.
The presentation is the other headline. A painterly visual style gives every realm the look of a moving illustration, and Motoi Sakuraba's score drives the battles. Released in 2021 to wide critical praise, Tales of Arise is the natural entry point for newcomers to the series on PS4, and a reward for longtime fans who wanted Tales to feel modern without losing its heart.
