Item Description

It starts with a strange incident at an oil facility in Alaska. Trouble at the Kemsynth Petroleum site pulls Gabe Logan back into the field, and what looks like a contained crisis quickly becomes a global hunt for a shadowy mercenary outfit called Red Section, with operations in Peru, a Bosnian weapons factory, Kaliningrad, Warsaw and Helsinki. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror was built for the PSP by Bend Studio, the team behind the original PlayStation trilogy, and it showed that the handheld could run a full console-style stealth shooter.

After the more open-ended Omega Strain, Dark Mirror brings the series back to tightly scripted, linear missions, and it is sharper for it. Gabe can press against walls and fire around corners from cover, and the game adds new weapon types and several vision modes for picking out enemies in the dark, so careful, stealthy play is rewarded as much as fast trigger fingers. Lian Xing takes the lead on occasional missions, and a bonus level in Bangkok pits Gabe against a gang leader planning to weaponize bird flu.

Multiplayer was a big part of its ambition. Up to eight players could fight over ad hoc or online play, with headset chat, in Deathmatch, a three-way Team Deathmatch where the IPCA, the Akram Brotherhood and Red Section each carry their own weapon sets, a Rogue Agent mode where one player scores alone until taken down, and an attack-and-defend Objective mode. Sony's online service for it is long gone, but local ad hoc play shows how far Bend pushed the hardware.

Critics loved it, and Dark Mirror holds an 87 on Metacritic. Sony later brought it to the PS2 in 2007, but that version trimmed much of the mature content and dropped from an M to a T rating, which makes the PSP release the original, uncut version of the story. It kicked off Gabe Logan's handheld era ahead of Logan's Shadow and stands among the strongest action games on the system.
