Item Description

Most Atari 2600 games asked for a high score. Swordquest: FireWorld asked players to solve a puzzle that could win them a real chalice of gold and platinum set with gems, valued at around $25,000. It was the second chapter of Atari's Swordquest series, an adventure contest that tied each cartridge to a DC comic book and promised real treasure to whoever could crack its riddles.

The game is a journey through a world of chambers whose layout is based on the Tree of Life from Jewish Kabbalah, a detail few players noticed at the time. You carry objects from room to room, and placing the right items in the right chambers reveals clue numbers that point to hidden words in the comic. Some room transitions drop you into twitchy action sequences, and those tests are notoriously fast and difficult. The comic follows the twins Tarra and Torr, and the story and the cartridge were designed to be read together.

FireWorld was programmed by Tod Frye, and it arrived in February 1983 hot on the heels of EarthWorld. Its contest was actually held: the Chalice of Light went to Michael Rideout, chosen from the finalists. WaterWorld followed, but the planned AirWorld never appeared, and as Atari's fortunes collapsed the series was left unfinished, along with its grand-prize sword.

That unfinished story is why Swordquest still fascinates collectors. FireWorld is a piece of the most ambitious promotion of the 2600 era, part puzzle box and part legend, and a cartridge that shows just how far Atari once tried to stretch a home video game.

About the game

Swordquest is an unfinished series of video games produced by Atari, Inc. in the 1980s as part of a contest, consisting of three finished games and a planned but never released fourth game. All of the games came with a comic book that explained the plot, as well as containing part of the solution to a major puzzle that had to be solved to win the contest. Fireworld was the second of the four games. Its room structure was based on the tree of life.
