Item Description

The first Mana game was a 1991 Game Boy adventure, released in North America as Final Fantasy Adventure, and Sword of Mana is what happened when Square Enix decided to tell that story again with everything the series had learned since. Co-developed with Brownie Brown, a studio founded by former Square developers, and illustrated by artists Shinichi Kameoka and Kouji Tsuda, it turned a monochrome classic into one of the most beautiful games on the Game Boy Advance, all soft painterly colors and storybook detail.

The biggest change is that you choose between two heroes whose stories run side by side. The hero is a gladiator-slave whose parents were killed by the Dark Lord of Granz, fighting his way out of captivity and chasing the Mana Sword for revenge. The heroine is a survivor of the Mana tribe, carrying a pendant that is the key to the Mana Tree after the Dark Lord and the scheming Julius destroyed her village. Playing both routes reveals what the other leaves unseen, and the expanded script adds far more story than the original Game Boy cartridge ever had room for.

Combat is real-time and quick, with weapons sorted into slash, jab and bash types, an overdrive gauge for special attacks and the series' signature Ring Command menu for switching gear and magic on the fly. A day and night cycle changes which enemies roam the world, eight Mana Spirits figure into the adventure, and the Hot House lets you forge weapons and grow produce between journeys. An AI partner fights at your side, and the Amigo link-cable feature adds powerful attacks with a friend. Kenji Ito, who composed the music for Final Fantasy Adventure, returned to score the remake.

Reviews at the time adored the artwork and were more divided on the story and that computer-controlled ally, so it is worth coming in for the presentation and the dual-hero structure rather than expecting a flawless rework. Those strengths are real, though: this is the most ambitious retelling of the series' first chapter, far more reimagined than the later Adventures of Mana, which stayed close to the Game Boy original. On a Game Boy Advance it is a gorgeous, substantial action RPG and a distinctive piece of Mana history.
