Item Description

For the first time in a Sword Art Online game, you can fly. Lost Song leaves the deadly floors of Aincrad behind for ALfheim Online, the fairy-themed virtual world from the anime's Fairy Dance arc, and lets Kirito and his friends spread their wings over Svart Alfheim, a newly opened expansion of floating islands anchored by the Floating City of Ryne. Developer Artdink built the game around that freedom, and leaping off a cliff edge to soar between islands is the moment that sells it.

The story is original to the game. Kirito and company race to conquer Svart Alfheim before the Shamrock, a massive guild led by Seven, a celebrity idol who doubles as a prodigy scientist. With no death game hanging over anyone, it plays as a lighter adventure among friends, full of the series' banter, rivalries and slice-of-life humor, and it gives the supporting cast far more of the spotlight than the anime often allowed.

Combat is real-time with a three-character party, and the roster is the big draw: well over a dozen playable characters, including Kirito, Asuna, Leafa, Sinon, Lisbeth, Silica and Klein, each with their own fairy race, weapons and magic. Fights move fluidly between ground and sky, and aerial battles against giant bosses circling the islands are where Lost Song feels most like the show. The game launched with online co-op quests for up to four players and player-versus-player matches.

Lost Song followed Hollow Fragment as the second Sword Art Online game on PlayStation Vita, and it bridges the series' early handheld era and later entries like Hollow Realization. It is also a rare chance to play as the supporting heroes in their ALfheim forms, from Leafa's sylph swordplay to Sinon's archery. For SAO viewers who always wanted to see ALfheim from the inside, it comes closest to the simple fantasy at the heart of Fairy Dance: taking flight.
