In ALfheim Online, every player is a fairy with wings, and Sword Art Online: Lost Song is the game that finally lets Kirito and his friends use them in a fight. Developed by Artdink and released for the Vita in 2015, it sends the gang into Svart ALfheim, a newly opened set of floating continents with the floating city of Ryne at its center, for an original story written for the game rather than adapted from the light novels or anime.

Flight changes everything about the combat. Battles play out on the ground and in open sky, and you can soar up to meet airborne bosses, dive onto enemies below and chain sword skills and magic in three dimensions, with flight restricted inside dungeons to keep those sections grounded. A large roster of series favorites is playable, including Kirito, Asuna, Leafa, Sinon and Klein, and you take a party of allies into each area while customizing skills and equipment between missions.

The new characters drive the story. Seven, a teenage idol and genius scientist, leads a powerful guild called Shamrock that is racing to clear Svart ALfheim first, and she brings along her bodyguard Sumeragi, while the mysterious swordswoman Rain has her own connection to Seven. Their rivalry with Kirito's group gives the adventure a competitive edge that the series' fans will recognize. It continues the timeline of the previous game, Hollow Fragment, so it slots neatly into the run of Sword Art Online games on Sony's handheld.

Reviews were mixed, with praise for the controls and the freedom of flight and complaints about plain dungeons, and the game was built with online co-op and player-versus-player battles in mind at launch. For Sword Art Online fans, it is the entry that captures ALfheim's sense of flight best, and a satisfying way to spend more time with the cast in an adventure they never had on screen.
