Item Description
Brainiac 13 has come back for Metropolis, and the city is already half-machine thanks to Lex Luthor's earlier bargain with him. Superman: The Man of Steel throws the Last Son of Krypton into that crisis with an open city to patrol, and a story that reaches well beyond the skyline. Bizarro and his clones break out of cryogenic confinement, Metallo kidnaps Lois Lane, nanobots turn John Henry Irons, the armored hero Steel, against Superman, and the chase leads to Mongul's Warworld and into the Phantom Zone for a showdown with the Cyborg Superman. Luthor helps for a while. Naturally, it doesn't last.
The full power set is here: flight, super strength, heat vision, freeze breath, plus X-ray and telescopic vision mapped to their own buttons. Twenty-five missions mix brawling with the rescue work that makes Superman, well, Superman: putting out fires, defusing bombs, escorting civilians, protecting buildings and smashing the beacons that keep pumping out Brainiac drones. Different enemies fall to different powers, so you are constantly switching between an icy blast, a heat-vision beam and a well-placed punch.
Honesty matters with this one. Reviewers in 2002 were hard on its fiddly flight controls and repetitive missions, and it never escaped the long shadow that hangs over Superman games. What it does offer is a villain lineup pulled straight from the comics, deep cuts like Brainiac 13 and Cyborg Superman that rarely appear anywhere else in gaming, and a generous set of extras: unlockable costumes including the Golden Age, Silver Age, Kingdom Come and Kryptonian suits, concept art, a model viewer and a free-roam mode for simply soaring over Metropolis.
It was made only for the original Xbox, arriving just months after the cartoon-inspired Shadow of Apokolips landed on other consoles, which makes it a distinctive piece of DC gaming history and a fascinating curio from the Man of Steel's long, bumpy road through video games.
