Ten new fighters were simply too much to squeeze into a download, so Capcom turned its next Street Fighter IV update into a standalone disc and priced it below a full new release. Super Street Fighter IV brought the PlayStation 3 a 35-fighter roster, a rebalanced engine and a sharper focus on long competitive sessions, and it quickly became the version serious players moved to.
The additions pull from every corner of the series. Dee Jay and T. Hawk return from Super Street Fighter II, Adon steps in from the original Street Fighter and the Alpha games, Guy and Cody arrive from Final Fight by way of Alpha, and Dudley, Ibuki and Makoto make the jump from Street Fighter III. Two brand-new faces stole plenty of attention: Juri, the gleefully sadistic taekwondo fighter powered by a S.I.N. device in her eye, and Hakan, the Turkish oil wrestler who slathers himself in oil to power up his slippery grabs and slides.
Every fighter also gains a second Ultra Combo, chosen before the match, and that one decision changes how familiar characters approach a fight. Ryu can pick the classic Metsu Hadoken or the electrified Metsu Shoryuken, and that kind of choice runs through the whole cast. The car-smashing and barrel-breaking bonus stages return to arcade mode, balance changes reshaped the tier lists, and the online side was built around Endless Battle lobbies, Team Battle matches and a Replay Channel for studying how top players handled each matchup.
Super is the point where Street Fighter IV grew from a comeback into a complete, deep roster fighter, and it laid the foundation for the Arcade Edition and Ultra versions that followed. On the PlayStation 3 it means the full 35-fighter cast with two Ultras for everyone, the version that defined the middle of the SF4 era for a lot of players and a natural next step after the original release.
