Item Description

Super Smash Bros. Melee arrived on the GameCube in 2001 and immediately set a new standard for what a platform fighter could be. Where HAL Laboratory's Nintendo 64 original felt like a party game first and a competitive title second, Melee turned up the speed, the depth and the spectacle all at once. The roster grew to 25 of Nintendo's best-loved characters, among them Mario, Link, Samus, Fox McCloud, Pikachu and Marth, each with a distinct move set that rewards serious practice. The stages are more dynamic, the presentation more polished, and the sheer pace of play gives it an electric quality that still holds up.

What makes Melee genuinely special is the way it works on two levels at once. Casually, it is an endlessly entertaining four-player brawler that anyone can pick up, with an Adventure mode, Event matches and a huge gallery of collectible trophies celebrating Nintendo history. Beneath that accessible surface sits one of the deepest competitive fighting games ever made, a system of timing, spacing and technique that a dedicated community has spent more than twenty years pushing to its limits. Techniques such as wavedashing grew out of the physics engine rather than deliberate design, giving Melee an organic complexity that later games have never quite replicated.

It became the best-selling game on the GameCube and remains a fixture of tournament play today. For anyone who grew up on Nintendo, or cares about the history of competitive gaming, Melee is one of the defining games of its generation.

About the game

A crossover platform fighting game featuring characters from Nintendo franchises including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Pokémon, and Fire Emblem. Unlike traditional fighters, the goal is to knock opponents off the stage rather than deplete a health bar. Damage accumulates as a percentage, increasing the distance a character is launched when hit. Players use simple one-button inputs combined with joystick directions to execute moves. The game supports up to four players simultaneously and includes various single-player modes alongside its multiplayer focus. Its fast-paced, aggressive gameplay fostered a long-running competitive esports scene that persisted well beyond the game's original lifespan.
