Solid Snake dropping out of a cardboard box onto a Nintendo stage. Sonic the Hedgehog racing into a fight with Mario. When Super Smash Bros. Brawl landed on the Wii in 2008, those two surprise guests told everyone that Masahiro Sakurai's crossover had grown into something bigger than a celebration of Nintendo alone. Developed by Sakurai's studio Sora with Nintendo publishing, the third Smash Bros. is the series at its most lavish: more fighters, more stages, more modes and more fan service than anyone had a right to expect.
The new headline mechanic is the Final Smash. Break open a floating Smash Ball and your fighter unleashes a screen-filling super move, from Pikachu's Volt Tackle to Kirby's cooking pot, turning any match into a scramble the moment one appears. The roster brought in Meta Knight, Pit, Ike, Wario, Olimar, Lucario, King Dedede, Diddy Kong, Zero Suit Samus and the Pokémon Trainer alongside returning favorites, and Assist Trophies summon cameo characters to wreak havoc for a few seconds. On the Wii you can play with the Wii Remote held sideways, the Remote and Nunchuk, a Classic Controller or a GameCube controller, which made Brawl the rare game every household's controller drawer could handle.
Then there is The Subspace Emissary, a full side-scrolling adventure mode with cinematic cutscenes that throws the cast together against a mysterious invading army, playable solo or in co-op. Around it sit a Stage Builder for designing your own arenas, hundreds of collectible trophies and stickers, and a My Music menu that lets you choose how often each track plays on each stage. The soundtrack is a feast in its own right, with a main theme composed by Nobuo Uematsu and a deep library of arrangements of classic Nintendo music.
Brawl is slower and floatier than Melee, and competitive players have argued about that ever since, but for living-room multiplayer and sheer scope it is hard to beat. It is also the entry that opened Smash to third-party guests, a door that later games would push wide open. Four friends, a Smash Ball and the Wii's biggest party on a single disc still make for very loud evenings.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series and the follow-up to Super Smash Bros. Melee. This edition introduces super attacks referred to as final smashes, as well as a brand-new adventure mode in The Subspace Emissary which is a side-scrolling adventure in the style of a platformer. It retains all basic mechanics of the Super Smash Bros. series, such as a damage meter, stocks, and Smash-style attacks.
