Item Description

For once, it is Mario who needs saving. Bowser's troops have carried off Mario, Luigi and a crowd of Toads to Vibe Island, and Princess Peach grabs a talking umbrella named Perry and heads out to rescue them herself. Super Princess Peach puts the Mushroom Kingdom's royal in the lead of her own side-scrolling platformer, and it builds its whole design around something no Mario game had tried before: her moods.

Vibe Island's strange power has made emotions run wild, and Peach turns that into a toolkit. Tapping one of four icons on the touch screen sets off a Vibe. Joy sends her floating on a whirlwind, Rage wraps her in flames and gives her a heavy stomp, Gloom has her sobbing streams of tears that let her run faster and water plants, and Calm restores her health. A Vibe gauge keeps you from leaning on any one feeling too long, and plenty of puzzles hinge on reading which emotion a room is asking for.

Perry pulls just as much weight. Peach swings the umbrella to bop enemies, scoops foes up inside it, and unlocks new abilities as the adventure goes on. The worlds have names as playful as the premise, from Ladida Plains and Hoo's Wood to Shriek Mansion, Fury Volcano and Gleam Glacier, and every stage hides captured Toads to rescue for players who want to clear the island completely.

The game was developed by Tose with Nintendo and is easier than most Mario platformers, which some reviewers noted at the time, but its bright art, inventive mood mechanics and steady stream of extras make it an easy, cheerful adventure to settle into on the DS. It was also Peach's first starring platformer, and the long wait for her next one, Princess Peach: Showtime! on Switch nearly two decades later, makes this DS original a fun piece of her history.
