Item Description

The rules have not changed since 2001: tilt the stage, roll the monkey, grab the bananas and reach the goal before the clock runs out. What makes Super Monkey Ball special is how much drama Sega squeezed out of that simple premise, with narrow rails, spinning platforms and moving floors that turn a short stage into a white-knuckle test of nerve. Banana Mania gathers the classic stages into one modern package for the series' 20th anniversary, built by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the Yakuza team whose roots run back to the series' original creators at Amusement Vision.

Its 300 stages are recreated from Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, which itself compiled the first two games, and the story mode from Super Monkey Ball 2 returns with new comic-style cutscenes as AiAi and his friends take on Dr. Bad-Boon. Beyond the main game, Golden Banana, Reverse and Dark Banana modes remix stages with fresh challenges, time attack feeds the speedrunning crowd, and a points shop unlocks characters, outfits and extras earned through play and hundreds of missions. Purists can still play the stages in their original form.

The guest list is a Sega fan's dream. Sonic and Tails roll alongside AiAi, MeeMee, Baby and GonGon, joined by Beat from Jet Set Radio and Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza, a fitting cameo given who made the game. For newcomers, optional helpers such as a jump borrowed from Banana Blitz, a slow-motion button, an extended time limit and a guide line showing the best path make the toughest stages approachable without forcing anything on veterans.

Then there are the party games. All twelve from Deluxe are here, including Monkey Target, Monkey Bowling and Monkey Fight, and Monkey Target in particular has been ruining friendly evenings since the GameCube days. As a sealed Xbox One release of the anniversary collection, it is the tidiest way to own the best of classic Monkey Ball in one box.
