Tilt the world, not the monkey. Super Monkey Ball's genius has always been its simplicity: you guide AiAi and friends, sealed inside transparent balls, by tilting the stage itself and letting physics do the rest. Super Monkey Ball 3D brought that idea to the Nintendo 3DS as part of the system's 2011 launch lineup, and gave players the choice of steering with the Circle Pad or tilting the handheld itself using the 3DS motion sensor.

The main Monkey Ball mode is the heart of the game: floating courses full of narrow rails, steep slopes and moving obstacles, where the goal is to scoop up bananas and roll through the goal before the clock runs out. The stereoscopic 3D helps you judge drops and gaps, which matters a great deal when one bad tilt sends your monkey tumbling into the void.

Two new modes round out the package. Monkey Race is a kart-style racer with items and twisting tracks, and Monkey Fight is a four-player arena brawler where monkeys bounce each other around for bananas. Both were built for local wireless play with up to four players, which makes them a fun bonus when friends have their own systems handy.

Critics found the main mode shorter and easier than the series' GameCube peak, so this is not the deepest Monkey Ball, but it is a breezy, pick-up-and-play take that suits a handheld well. It is also a snapshot of the 3DS's first months, when launch games were busy showing off what tilt controls and glasses-free 3D could do.
