Complete in box: the disc, the manual and the original case, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. This is a Japanese region release, and the packaging and game text are primarily in Japanese. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Discs are professionally resurfaced when they need it and tested before listing. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Super Monkey Ball 2 takes everything that made the original a GameCube launch sensation and pushes it in two directions at once: meaner, more inventive stage design for solo players and a party menu stuffed to the edges for everyone else. The rules have not changed. You still tilt the world rather than the monkey, coaxing AiAi and friends across floating courses before the clock runs out, but Amusement Vision clearly spent the sequel dreaming up new ways to make that simple idea squirm.
The headline addition is a Story mode. The villainous Dr. Bad-Boon has made off with the monkeys' bananas, and you chase him through ten worlds of ten stages each, with unlimited attempts at every stage and a movie waiting at the end of each world. Challenge mode keeps the arcade structure for score-chasers, with limited lives and a strict timer across escalating difficulty levels, and Practice mode lets you drill any stage you have already cleared. The courses themselves are more mechanical and puzzle-like than before, full of switches that change how the stage moves, spinning platforms and layouts that seem to have been built by someone who enjoys watching you fall.
The party games doubled from six to twelve. Monkey Race, Fight, Target, Billiards, Bowling and Golf all return, joined by Monkey Boat, Monkey Shot, Monkey Dogfight, Monkey Soccer, Monkey Baseball and Monkey Tennis, every one of them playable by one to four people. Monkey Target is still the one everybody fights over, but the sheer variety turns a single disc into a whole night of couch competition, with something on the menu for the friend who never wants to play the main game.
This listing is the Japanese release, published by Sega in the country where Monkey Ball began life as an arcade cabinet under Toshihiro Nagoshi's team. For import collectors it is the game as Japanese players first bought it, a natural companion to a North American copy on the shelf, with the same tilting, laughing, controller-gripping game underneath. Plenty of fans rank this as the high point of the whole series: the entry where the stage design got cleverer and the party lineup got enormous.
The objective of Super Monkey Ball 2 is to guide a monkey trapped inside a plastic ball through a maze to the goal. There are three variations, story mode, challenge mode, and practice mode. In story mode you have an unlimited number of tries to complete a stage, and after clearing 10 stages a movie clip is shown followed by a new world of 10 stages. In challenge mode, you have a limited number of monkeys and a time limit to complete numerous levels of increasing difficulty. In practice mode, you can play any stage already completed in the other two modes. In addition to the main game options, numerous party games are also included. These are monkey race, monkey fight, monkey target, monkey billiards, monkey bowling, monkey golf, monkey boat, monkey shot, monkey dogfight, monkey soccer, monkey baseball, and monkey tennis. The party games can be played by one to four players.
