Item Description
Ask a room full of Mario fans to name the best 2D platformer ever made and Super Mario World will come up fast. Dinosaur Land hides 96 exits, secret routes along the Star Road and a moment that still feels like a celebration: Mario climbing onto Yoshi's back for the first time. Super Mario Advance 2 put the whole Super Nintendo launch classic on the Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo made far more changes than a straight port would need.
The core adventure is all here. Mario travels from Yoshi's Island through the Donut Plains, the Vanilla Dome caverns, the Forest of Illusion and Chocolate Island on the way to the Valley of Bowser, where the Koopalings guard their castles and Bowser waits in his clown car. The Cape Feather turns a running start into long, swooping flights, Yoshi gains new abilities depending on the color of the shell in his mouth, and Dragon Coins and secret exits reward players who poke into every corner. The Special Zone, with stages named in surfer slang like Gnarly and Tubular, is still one of the series' great hidden rewards.
What makes this version worth owning is how much Nintendo tinkered with it. Luigi becomes a fully distinct character, with higher, floatier jumps, looser traction and the ability to spit enemies back out while riding Yoshi, so a second run through Dinosaur Land plays differently. You can save anywhere, a status screen tracks the exits each brother has found along with your Dragon Coin progress, and Dragon Coins now appear in Ghost Houses, fortresses and castles too, giving completionists a fresh goal. Charles Martinet provides new voice clips, the colors were brightened for the GBA's screen, and the arcade Mario Bros. remake comes along for link-cable play with up to four players.
Super Mario World is a game people keep replaying for decades, and this version gives them a reason to start again, layering Luigi's own physics and new completion goals on top of near-flawless level design. On original Game Boy Advance hardware it makes a superb pocket companion to the SNES cartridge, and a fascinating look at how Nintendo reworked a masterpiece for a handheld.
