Super Mario USA is the official Japanese Famicom release of what Western players know as Super Mario Bros. 2 — and the story behind it is one of the most fascinating in Nintendo's history. The original Doki Doki Panic was reworked with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad as its cast and shipped to North American and European audiences in 1988. When that version came back to Japan under the Super Mario USA title, it gave Japanese Famicom owners their first real taste of the quirky, vegetable-pulling, world-hopping adventure that had become a global phenomenon. It's a genuinely different beast from the rest of the Famicom Mario lineup, and that distinctiveness is a big part of its charm.
