Item Description

Nobody in the Mushroom Kingdom bothered to hire a referee. Super Mario Strikers trims soccer down to five players a side on a compact pitch, rings it with electrified barriers and throws out the rulebook, so flattening a player who does not even have the ball, dropping a banana peel in the penalty area or shoving a defender into the fence are all simply part of the game. It is loud, fast and gleefully mean, and it turned out to be one of the most competitive multiplayer games Nintendo released on the GameCube.

Every team pairs a captain, chosen from Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario and Waluigi, with a trio of sidekicks drawn from the Toads, Koopas, Birdos or Hammer Bros., all backed by a Kritter in goal. The headline move belongs to captains alone: charge up a Super Strike, nail the timing on the gauge, and the shot counts for two goals, complete with a character-specific flourish. Shells, bananas and other items turn up mid-match to stun opponents or grant a burst of invincibility, and Bowser himself occasionally stomps onto the pitch to make trouble for both teams at once.

Developer Next Level Games gave the whole thing an attitude the Mario sports games had never tried before. Characters swagger, sneer and showboat through their goal celebrations, the camera loves a bone-rattling tackle, and the bright, rounded Mario look picks up a punchier, almost street-sport edge. Grudge Match handles quick games against the computer or friends, Cup Battles sends you through tournaments that escalate into tougher Super cups, and Strikers 101 teaches the fundamentals. The single-player menu is lean, and reviewers said so, but matches against friends stay tense and funny long after everyone has learned when to pass, when to tackle and when to wind up a Super Strike.

Launched in late 2005, it kicked off the Mario Strikers series, followed by Mario Strikers Charged on the Wii and, years later, Mario Strikers: Battle League on the Switch. Next Level Games went on to make Punch-Out!! for the Wii and the Luigi's Mansion sequels before Nintendo brought the studio in-house, and the same confident, expressive character animation is already on display here. On a GameCube shelf it fills a slot nothing else does: Mario Kart: Double Dash!! may get the party started, but Strikers is where four-controller rivalries get personal.

About the game

Super Mario Strikers is the first game in the Mario Strikers series, it features a version of soccer without referees and rules and has power-ups and special strikes which count as two goals. In comparison to actual soccer, the game features a smaller version of the soccer field and each team has only five members instead of the usual eleven-a-side rule. The match time can be manually set from 2 to 15 minutes but is defined as 5 minutes by default. If time runs out when scores are level, a Sudden Death follows the regular game time where next goal wins.
