Somewhere around the moment Mario flings his hat at a T-Rex and suddenly finds himself stomping through the Cascade Kingdom as a dinosaur, Super Mario Odyssey makes its intentions clear. This is a game that says yes to every strange idea. Built by Nintendo as the Switch's big 3D Mario adventure, it returned the series to the open, sandbox-style exploration of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine and packed more invention into every corner than either of them.
The engine of it all is Cappy, a living hat who joins Mario after Bowser shreds his trademark cap in the opening scene. Throw Cappy at a Goomba, a Bullet Bill, a Cheep Cheep, a Lava Bubble or even a frog, and Mario captures it, borrowing its body and abilities to reach places he never could on his own. Goombas stack into wobbling towers, Lava Bubbles swim through the bubbling soup of the Luncheon Kingdom, and certain walls flatten Mario into an 8-bit sprite for side-scrolling stretches that wink at his NES roots. Cappy also stretches Mario's own moveset: hat throws, dives and cap jumps chain together into a kind of movement that skilled players spend hours refining.
The story is pure Mario with a mischievous twist. Bowser has kidnapped Peach for a forced wedding, hired the rabbit-like Broodals as his wedding planners and is touring the globe gathering everything the ceremony needs, so Mario gives chase in the hat-shaped Odyssey airship, powering it with Power Moons. Each kingdom is a dense playground of them: the sun-bleached town of Tostarena in the Sand Kingdom, the volcanic kitchen of the Luncheon Kingdom and, above all, New Donk City, where a tiny cartoon Mario runs among realistically proportioned citizens and Mayor Pauline headlines a festival set to the swing number “Jump Up, Super Star!” Moons hide on rooftops, behind waterfalls, at the end of timed challenges and under suspicious patches of ground.
Critics ranked it with the very best games of its generation, and it is still the 3D Mario that most rewards curiosity. Assist Mode adds guide arrows and extra recovery for younger players, a second player can take the other Joy-Con and steer Cappy independently, and finishing the story opens up a wave of new moons and a celebration of Mario history that keeps paying off long after Bowser's wedding falls apart. It works as a first 3D Mario for a newcomer and as a movement playground for veterans who want to see how far a cap throw can carry them.
Explore incredible places far from the Mushroom Kingdom as you join Mario and his new ally Cappy on a massive, globe-trotting 3D adventure. Use amazing new abilities, like the power to capture and control objects, animals, and enemies to collect Power Moons so you can power up the Odyssey airship and save Princess Peach from Bowser’s wedding plans!
