Item Description
Leap off a tiny planet and gravity grabs you before you can drift into space. That single idea, worlds small enough to circle in seconds, each with its own pull, made Super Mario Galaxy feel like a revolution when it reached the Wii in 2007. Three years later, Super Mario Galaxy 2 took the same toolbox and went wild with it. This Switch release finally puts the pair together, and it marks the first time Galaxy 2 has been playable on Switch at all.
The first Galaxy sets the stage. Bowser lifts Princess Peach's castle into the cosmos, and Mario teams up with Rosalina and the star-shaped Lumas aboard the Comet Observatory, a hub that slowly comes back to life as he recovers Power Stars. The spin attack becomes his signature move, and power-ups like the Bee Mushroom, Boo Mushroom and Spring Mushroom keep changing how he travels. The sweeping orchestral score gives every galaxy a sense of scale and wonder few platformers have matched.
Galaxy 2 trades the observatory for Starship Mario, a planet-sized ship shaped like Mario's own head, and fills its levels with the ideas that would not fit in the first game. Yoshi returns as a rideable partner who can swallow enemies and gobble Dash Peppers and Blimp Fruit, while the Cloud Flower, Rock Mushroom and Spin Drill add new ways to move. It is tougher and denser than its predecessor, with hidden Green Stars waiting for players who want to see everything, and it is one of the best-reviewed games Nintendo has ever released.
The Switch versions sharpen both games to 1080p, let you aim the star pointer with motion controls or the touchscreen in handheld play, and add an optional Assist Mode with extra health that gently returns Mario to solid ground after a fall. Both soundtracks can be played straight from the main menu, a handful of new storybook chapters appear, and a second player can still join as a Co-Star to collect Star Bits. Together they make up the high-water mark of space-age Mario, two adventures that rewired how a platformer could think about up and down.
