World 1-1 in full color, in your hands, on a bus or under the covers after bedtime: Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is the game that made the Game Boy Color feel like a portable NES. Nintendo's 1999 release rebuilds the 1985 original with real care, keeping all 32 levels, the weight of Mario's jump, the enemy patterns and the timing that taught a generation how a platformer is supposed to feel.
The handheld screen shows less of the world than a TV did, so Nintendo let the camera follow Mario more closely and added the ability to nudge the view up or down to scout ahead, a smart fix that leaves the original level design intact. Then it piles on extras. Challenge Mode sends you back through every stage hunting five hidden Red Coins and a Yoshi Egg while chasing a target score, You Vs. Boo races you against a ghostly rival, and the link-cable VS Mode lets two players race through eight competition courses. Luigi is along for the ride too, and the Toy Box adds a fortune teller, a calendar and printable extras for the Game Boy Printer.
The real treat for longtime fans is hidden behind a high score. Rack up 300,000 points in the original game and Super Mario Bros. for Super Players opens up, a version of the punishing Japanese sequel known in the West as The Lost Levels, with poison mushrooms, sudden gusts of wind and some of the cruelest jumps Nintendo ever designed. It was the first time that sequel appeared on a portable system.
Add an album of pictures earned by completing objectives, and it is easy to see why Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is so often ranked among the very best games on the Game Boy Color. It is the definitive pocket edition of the game that started it all, and a perfect way to introduce a younger player to where Mario began.
