Game + manual: the cartridge and its manual, no box. This is the "Left Bros" variant, identified by the placement of "Bros." on the label. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
The curtain rises, quite literally, on Super Mario Bros. 3. The title screen opens like a stage show, blocks look bolted onto painted scenery, and crouching on the right white block long enough drops Mario behind the backdrop altogether. Shigeru Miyamoto has said the game was conceived as a stage play, and he and co-director Takashi Tezuka packed nearly every level with a trick to play on you. The game launched in Japan in 1988 and reached North America in 1990, after the final scene of the movie The Wizard gave American kids a first look at Mario in flight.
The biggest change is structure. Each of the eight kingdoms, from Grass Land and Desert Land to Giant Land, Sky Land and the gloomy Dark Land, is laid out as an overworld map where you pick your route, duck into Toad Houses for items, gamble on the N-Spade card-matching game and dodge wandering Hammer Bros. Power-ups go into an inventory you can bank and spend before a tough stage. The Super Leaf makes Mario a raccoon who swats enemies with his tail and takes off once he builds enough running speed; the Tanooki Suit adds the power to become an untouchable statue, and changing mid-jump slams it down in the series' first ground pound; the Frog Suit makes water levels a pleasure, and the Hammer Suit turns him into walking artillery. A second player can take Luigi across the same map in alternating turns, with a remake of the original Mario Bros. arcade game letting one brother steal the other's hard-won cards.
This is also where Bowser's seven children, the Koopalings, made their debut. Each one steals a king's magic wand, turns the monarch into an animal and flees on an airship, so each of the first seven worlds builds toward a cannon-packed, auto-scrolling chase across the deck of a flying battleship. Along the way come fortresses guarded by Boom Boom, a sun that swoops out of the sky to attack you in the desert, oversized Goombas and Koopa Troopas in Giant Land, and Warp Whistles hidden where only curious players think to look. Koji Kondo's score ties it all together, from the bouncy overworld tunes to the ominous airship march.
Super Mario World would build directly on its overworld map and its flying, and nearly every 2D Mario since owes something to ideas first tried here. "Left Bros." refers to an alternate printing of the game's artwork in which the word "Bros." sits on the left side of the logo rather than in its familiar centered spot, a small difference that has become one of the most talked-about variants in NES collecting. The adventure itself is the same dense, secret-packed masterpiece, still sharp in the hands.
Super Mario Bros. 3, the third entry in the Super Mario Bros. series and Super Mario franchise, sees Mario or Luigi navigate a nonlinear world map containing platforming levels and optional minigames and challenges. The game features more diverse movement options and new items alongside more complex level designs and boss battles.
