Item Description

Before Mario learned to fly with a Super Leaf, he spent an entire adventure pulling turnips out of the ground and hurling them at masked Shy Guys. Super Mario Bros. 2 has always been the odd one out in the series, adapted from the Japanese game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and set in the dream world of Subcon, and that strangeness is exactly why people love it. Super Mario Advance brought it to the Game Boy Advance as a launch title, the first of Nintendo's four Mario remakes on the system.

The choice of hero is the big draw. Mario is the all-rounder, Luigi kicks his legs for huge, floaty jumps, Toad plucks vegetables faster than anyone, and Princess Peach can hover in midair for a moment, which turns tricky gaps into easy hops. Each character changes how you tackle the levels, from quicksand deserts to cloud-top climbs, and the bosses are a memorable cast of their own: egg-spitting Birdo, the bomb-throwing Mouser, the three-headed Tryclyde and Wart himself, a frog king who famously hates vegetables.

This version is more than a straight port. Built on the Super Mario All-Stars presentation, it adds giant Shy Guys and oversized vegetables, a new scoring system that rewards knocking down a string of enemies with one throw, and five red Ace Coins hidden in every level. Robirdo, a hulking robot Birdo, takes over as the World 3 boss, and finishing the game opens the Yoshi Challenge, which sends you back through every stage hunting for two hidden Yoshi Eggs. Digital voice clips for the heroes and bosses round out the update.

As in every game in the Super Mario Advance line, there is also a remake of the arcade Mario Bros., with classic co-op and a battle mode for up to four players over the link cable. The game sold well enough that Nintendo later reissued it under its Player's Choice label, and it holds a special place as the cartridge countless players slid into a brand-new Game Boy Advance on day one. It is the most complete version of Mario's strangest adventure, and the extra collectibles give even veterans of the NES original something new to chase.
