Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The manual is intact, with light handling wear. The box is structurally sound, with visible shelf wear including edge wear, corner softening and minor surface scuffs. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Few first impressions in gaming match the moment Mario drops into the courtyard of Princess Peach's castle and you realize you can simply run in any direction you like. Super Mario 64 launched alongside the Nintendo 64 in 1996 and turned three-dimensional platforming from an experiment into a destination. Shigeru Miyamoto's team handed players a castle full of paintings, each one a doorway into a self-contained world, and trusted them to explore, with only Power Stars to find and Bowser to stop.

The controls are the secret weapon, and they were built around the N64 controller's analog stick. Ease it forward and Mario tiptoes; push it all the way and he sprints. From there the move set opens up: the triple jump, the wall kick, the long jump, the backward somersault, the dive and the ground pound, each so responsive that simply moving around feels like play. Three special caps stretch the toolkit further, with the Wing Cap sending Mario soaring, the Metal Cap letting him walk along the sea floor and shrug off enemies, and the Vanish Cap turning him ghostly enough to pass through certain walls and grates. Even the camera has a personality, operated by the Lakitu Bros. as they float along behind him.

Fifteen main courses hang on the castle walls, and nearly every one has become a shared memory for a generation of players: the cannon-dotted hills of Bob-omb Battlefield and its showdown with King Bob-omb, the sunken pirate ship in Jolly Roger Bay, the creaking halls of Big Boo's Haunt, and Tick Tock Clock, where the position of the clock's hand when you jump in sets how fast everything moves. Wet-Dry World changes its water level depending on how you enter, and Tiny-Huge Island lets you choose your scale by picking which painting to leap through. Racing Koopa the Quick, sliding down the castle's secret slide and spinning Bowser by the tail into the bombs ringing his arena are all part of the long road to 120 Power Stars. Koji Kondo's score ties it together, and the shimmering Dire Dire Docks theme is among the most fondly remembered pieces of music Nintendo has ever produced.

Its influence is hard to overstate. The camera and movement vocabulary it established shaped 3D action games for years afterward, and it refuses to stop being played: speedrunners are still finding new routes through the castle decades later, and lapsed players rediscover its freedom within minutes of picking up a controller. Playing it on the hardware it was designed around, analog stick and all, is the purest way to relive the moment Mario stepped into a third dimension.
