A storm blows through the Mushroom Kingdom, strips the Super Leaves from the Tanooki Tree and scatters them across the land, and in the confusion Bowser makes off with Princess Peach. It is a simple setup for one of the cleverest Mario games Nintendo has made. Super Mario 3D Land, released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, takes the timed courses, tight design and goal flagpoles of the 2D games and builds them in three dimensions, creating stages that are short, dense and endlessly inventive.
The Tanooki Suit returns in full force, letting Mario swat enemies with his tail and float gently down from high jumps, and new power-ups add fresh tricks: the Boomerang Flower turns him into a boomerang-throwing hero, and the Propeller Box launches him high into the air. Struggle on a stage enough times and a white Tanooki Suit appears, granting invincibility so nobody gets stuck for good. Every stage hides three Star Medals for the curious, and the courses keep reinventing themselves with flipping platforms, shifting blocks and perspective puzzles that hide secrets in plain sight.
The stereoscopic 3D is more than a gimmick here. Jumps that are tricky to judge on a flat screen become instinctive with the depth turned on, and some courses play visual tricks that only make sense when you see them in 3D. Boom Boom and the debuting Pom Pom keep the airships lively, and Bowser's castles end in nervy showdowns on collapsing bridges, just as the classics taught you to expect.
Finishing the eight main worlds is only half the game: a full set of Special Worlds opens up with remixed, much tougher versions of earlier stages and lets Luigi join in. Developed by Nintendo's Tokyo studio, the team behind Super Mario Galaxy, 3D Land laid the groundwork for Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U, and it is still the best showcase of what the 3DS's depth effect could do for a platformer.
Super Mario 3D Land is the second 3D Super Mario platformer for a handheld device, and the successor to Super Mario Galaxy 2. The game is closely based on side-scrolling Mario games, as it combine elements from both traditional 2D Mario games and modern free-roaming 3D Mario games. It also introduces elements into the series, including power-ups and gameplay mechanics.
