Three consoles, three reinventions of Mario, one Switch release. Super Mario 3D All-Stars gathers Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, the trio that carried Nintendo's mascot from the Nintendo 64 through the GameCube and onto the Wii, and lets you play them back to back on a single system. Nintendo released it in September 2020 for Mario's 35th anniversary and sold it only for a limited time, with sales ending in March 2021, which gives the collection a special place in the Switch library.

Super Mario 64 is where 3D platforming learned to speak. Jumping into the paintings of Peach's Castle to hunt Power Stars in Bob-omb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress and Cool, Cool Mountain still feels like opening a toybox, and the triple jump, wall kick and long jump give Mario a moveset players are still mastering decades later. Super Mario Sunshine trades the castle for the tropical resort of Isle Delfino, where Mario is framed for a graffiti spree by the mysterious Shadow Mario and has to scrub the island clean with F.L.U.D.D., a talking water pack that doubles as a hover jet and a rocket. It is the strangest and sunniest 3D Mario, and the one with the most devoted cult following.

Super Mario Galaxy then launches the whole thing into space. Rosalina's Comet Observatory serves as the hub, gravity bends around tiny planetoids, and power-ups like the Bee Mushroom and Boo Mushroom keep changing how Mario moves. Its sweeping orchestral soundtrack is a high point of Nintendo's music history. On Switch, the Wii Remote pointer is handled with motion aiming when docked and the touchscreen in handheld play, and a second player can still join in to help gather Star Bits.

The collection sharpens Sunshine and Galaxy for HD screens, keeps Super Mario 64 close to its original look, and adds a music player with the soundtracks of all three games. Played in order, it traces 3D Mario's first decade from the 1996 pioneer to the Wii-era showpiece, and watching each game answer the one before it is half the fun. As an anniversary release Nintendo deliberately kept on store shelves for only a few months, it is a time capsule of Mario's 35th birthday as much as a trio of great games.
