Item Description

Super Hang-On is all about the lean: tipping the bike so far into a sweeping bend that the horizon tilts, then holding your nerve as the checkpoint timer ticks toward zero. Sega AM2 made it as the sequel to Hang-On, the 1985 arcade hit that sat players on a full-size motorcycle, and the 1987 arcade game ran on the same sprite-scaling hardware as Out Run. The Genesis version brought that speed home in 1989, early in the console's life.

Arcade mode offers four courses, one per continent, rising from Africa's beginner route through Asia and America to the long, punishing run across Europe. The turbo button only kicks in once you are already near top speed, so the skill lies in keeping the throttle pinned through corners instead of reaching for the brakes. Before each race you pick your soundtrack from four tracks, Outride a Crisis, Sprinter, Winning Run and Hard Road, and the first of them has been lodged in players' heads for decades.

The Genesis cartridge also adds something the arcade never had. Original mode turns the game into a light career, where you race for prize money, spend it on upgraded parts and take advice from a mechanic as your bike improves. That structure gives the home version a reason to keep playing long after you have conquered the four arcade courses.

It is a showcase for the super-scaler era that produced Out Run and Space Harrier, condensed into a cartridge with more to it than a straight port, and a sharp example of how quickly the Genesis established itself as a home for Sega's arcade racers.
