Plug a Game Boy cartridge into the Super NES, pick a border, paint the screen in color, and suddenly Metroid II is playing on the living room TV. Nintendo Power's Super Game Boy Player's Guide was written for exactly that thrill. Published in 1994 as a follow-up to the magazine's earlier Game Boy guide, it shows off the color palettes the adapter could apply and gives extended coverage to games released since that first book, especially the ones built with Super Game Boy enhancements.
The lineup reads like a tour of early Game Boy favorites: Tetris, Dr. Mario, Alleyway, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Metroid II: Return of Samus, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Pinball Land, Yoshi, Tennis, World Cup and the 1994 Donkey Kong, a game that showed off the adapter's custom borders and colors better than almost anything else.
Most guides document a single game. This one documents a piece of hardware and the way it changed how a whole library looked, which makes it a charming companion to a Super Game Boy and a stack of gray cartridges.
