Item Description

Super Bowling borrows a trick from fighting games. You face computer opponents on their home lanes, and beating them opens those settings for the rest of the game, settings that range from frozen ponds to neon-lit Chinese temples. It is a long way from a plain bowling alley, and that sense of place gives a simple sport a surprising amount of personality.

The game is a 3D remake of the 1992 Super NES Super Bowling, produced by Yoshihisa Kishimoto, best known as the creator of Double Dragon. It came out in Japan in 1999 and reached North America in 2000 through UFO Interactive Games. Alongside the standard game there is a Golf mode, and a Practice mode lets you build your own pin setups and work on knocking them down with one or two balls. Four computer opponents, two men and two women, stand between you and the full set of lanes, and several multiplayer variations let friends take turns at the line.

Reviews landed in the middle of the road, with N64 Magazine scoring it 72%, and it is best enjoyed for what it is: a relaxed, quick-to-learn bowling game with more character than its premise suggests. On a Nintendo 64 shelf it fills the ten-pin slot, and it makes a neat footnote to the career of the man who gave the world Billy and Jimmy Lee.

About the game

Super Bowling is a third-person bowling game. Players may bowl in several different environments, which range from ice ponds to neon-lit Chinese temples. Players can face-off against characters in their home stages, much like a fighting game. If the player wins they can then play on these stages in other play modes. Multi-player modes are also available, with a number of different variations.
