Few multiplayer formulas have aged as gracefully as Bomberman's: drop a bomb, run, and try not to box yourself in with your own blast. Super Bomberman R 2, Konami's 2023 follow-up to the Super Bomberman R revival, keeps that grid-based panic intact and builds outward from it, giving the series more ways to play than it has had in years.

The headline addition is Castle, an asymmetric mode that pits a lone defender against a crowd of attackers. The defender guards treasure chests with traps and special abilities while everyone else hunts for keys to crack them open. Because the game also includes a stage editor, Castle doubles as a design challenge: building a fortress that frustrates your friends is half the fun, and a well-placed chokepoint can be as satisfying as a perfect bomb trap. It is a smart twist on a series that has mostly been about everyone-for-themselves chaos, and it rewards communication and planning in a way classic battle never did.

Standard battle is still the heart of it, the same frantic arena of power-ups, kicked bombs and last-second escapes that made the Super Nintendo games a sleepover staple. Grand Prix turns that into a team competition, and Battle 64, the huge-lobby elimination mode that debuted in Super Bomberman R Online, was built around online play at a scale the series never attempted in its 16-bit days. Solo players get an expanded story mode with stage-based exploration and boss battles in the spirit of the first R.

The bright, chunky character designs and quick rounds make it a natural fit for a living-room night on the PS5, where a few friends on one couch can go from polite to screaming within two minutes. It is the most feature-packed Bomberman in a long while, and proof that a bomb, a maze and a crowd of friends still produce some of the best arguments in gaming.
